Psych Blue is experimental film, the results will be unpredictable but fun. Dustin, a guy we met briefly in LA makes them by taking regular films/disposables and exposing them to colored and patterned lights under fairly controlled circumstances. In other words, whatever the results of your photos, they are the product of light and chemicals alone.

Disposable cameras, and film in general, can be easy to waste by taking pictures how you might take them on a phone or digital camera. Film is limited and special, it can also get expensive. It'll cost between $6-12 to process the film so you really wanna take more care in how you take your pictures and finding/waiting for the moment you capture. These could be some of your favorite pictures you take, or they could be throw away pictures and it'll all depend on your intention.

tips for disposable cameras

Here are some quick tips and fast resources for how to make the most of disposable cameras.

  1. Don't put your finger over the lens. The lens is not linked to the viewfinder so if you’re finger is on the lens you won’t see that you’re blocking it through the viewfinder. Keep your fingers under control.
  2. Always use the flash. Disposable cameras have a set exposure and won't do too well in low light settings. If it's bright, you still might use the flash - better safe than sorry.
  3. Take photos from different distances. Everything will be in focus from about 4/5 feet away to infinity. You've got a lot of room to play. If you take all the photos from the same distance looking at your film is going to be like listening to your old favorite bands new album where all the songs are the same.
  4. Same goes for angles. Experiment. Eye level isn't the only level. Crouch, stand on steps, move around, lay on the floor, tilt it crooked. The more diverse your angles, the more fun you'll have taking the photos and the more interesting your photos may be. If every photo is shot the same it may be very disappointing.
  5. Wait for the moment, and then accept what you get. Film is not like digital. On digital it costs nothing to take another photo if your subject wasn't ready or blinked. With film being limited, we recommend just accepting the blink as part of the moment, or wait to get exactly what you want. You've only got 24/27 shots so make the most of them!
